Intro

This nostalgic Art Nouveau style building with its Belle Époque atmosphere, already described in Thomas Mann's book "Zauberberg" [Magic Mountain], opened its doors in 1900 as a luxury sanatorium and was later converted to a mountain hotel. The soul of the house, its architecture, has been preserved in its original form until today. The Villa Guarda - formerly the former doctor's residence - and the Chalet exude new splendour with their luxurious suites. With the Schatzalp train, the "Magic Mountain" is just four minutes away from the centre of Davos. Free WLAN access throughout the hotel premises, even in the Schatzalp/Strela skiing area.

The Schatzalp, also known as the "Magic Mountain", is located on a sun-drenched plateau directly above Davos. The Schatzalp is not known as the "Magic Mountain" for no reason: firstly readers of the literary masterpiece of the same name by Thomas Mann imagine his "magic mountain" to have been located here and, secondly, the Schatzalp is still today enchanting its visitors in a very special and mysterious way.

The Schatzalp offers visitors a wealth of diverse attractions. The Hotel Schatzalp lies 300 metres above Davos in a splendid south-facing position. The hotel, built in the Art Nouveau style between 1898 and 1900, was originally designed as a luxurious sanatorium and was regarded as one of the most advanced healing centres of its kind in the region at the start of the 20th century. Since 1953, the Schatzalp Sanatorium has been run as the first-class Hotel Schatzalp. The hotel, along with the entire mountain, has been immortalised by the novel "The Magic Mountain" (1924) written by the acclaimed German author and Nobel Prize Winner Thomas Mann. The Schatzalp Panorama Restaurant (do be sure to try their fondue specialities!) offers guests a splendid view over Davos. A short uphill walk (15 minutes) leads to the Strelaalp mountain restaurant (1921 m above sea level), which also features a wonderful sun terrace with fantastic views over the whole of Davos.

Voted Historic Hotel of Switzerland in 2008. Opened in 1900 as a luxury sanatorium, the architecture has been preserved in its original form. The Schatzalp unlocks magnificent nature and cultural experiences, with the kitchen and the cellar offering up sensual treats. For ten years, Kaiser Wilhelm II leased three rooms that have been preserved in the Art Nouveau / Belle Époque style, and Thomas Mann mentioned the hotel in his novel "Zauberberg".

Located 300m above Davos, the Schatzalp is a place for anybody who needs peace and quiet, who values nature or who wants to experience history. This historic hotel and its Alpine surroundings shape each other. The original funicular railway, built at the same time as the hotel, is still used to bring guests to the hotel. The Schatzalp Hotel was conceived as a luxury sanatorium and built by the architect's firm Pfleghard & Haefeli. It opened in 1900 as a prime location for an international circle of tuberculosis patients who could afford the rather exclusive care. The core principle of therapy in those days was optimal exposure to sunlight, which is why the hotel faces south. Its more than 100 meter long façade resembles a line of terraces, sheltered from the wind: Here, on the legendary yellow Davos deck chairs, the patients rested wrapped in blankets for days on end, basking in the sun and the fresh mountain air. Progress in medicine led to the sanatorium being closed in the 1950's. But as early as 1954 the Schatzalp was reopened as a hotel with 92 rooms, after careful restoration. Much of the original building has remained, including the original 1900 lift facility. The interior captivates the eye with its spacious Art Nouveau common rooms and the many original fittings in the partially restored historic bathrooms. Other quality additions – such as some of the period furniture – date back to the hotel's 1954 transformation.
