On the edge of the old town, Zug Castle is the oldest still preserved profane building in Zug and is a landmark of the city. With its many nooks and crannies, Zug Castle has been home to the museum of cultural history for the city and the Canton of Zug since 1983.
Zug Castle is the oldest surviving secular building in the city and one of its landmarks. It was a medieval seat of power, later the representative residence of important Zug families, and has housed the historical museum since 1983. Couples can tie the knot in two different rooms. The new wedding venues are located in particularly impressive areas of the castle: the studio in the attic, with its original late 15th-century roof truss, offers a unique atmosphere with views of Zug's old town, the Zytturm tower, Lake Zug and the city walls. The Hediger Room, built around 1890, bears witness to the castle's last private owners. Particularly noteworthy is the ornate tiled stove by Hafnerei Keiser from 1901. Become part of the romantic history of this castle. Please make bookings and enquiries exclusively through the Zug District Registry Office.
The castle dates back to the 12th century, although the first signs of a settlement are even older. Based on archaeological finds, 26 different building phases between the 8th century and the 20th century have been reconstructed. From 1979 to 1982, the building underwent extensive restoration and opened as a historical museum in 1983. It treasures, documents and shares the history of Zug from the Late Middle Ages to the present.
The permanent display was redesigned in 2014 and each room presents its own exhibition on a specific theme. This creates a charming variety, which inspires a return visit to explore deeper and experience things from a different perspective. In the special exhibitions it holds regularly, the museum provides an in-depth insight into current and particular topics.
Children and families can explore the castle in a fun, playful way. Younger visitors will love the room especially designed for them: it is a great place to play, dress up and spend time.
