ICT & AI
While Basel is undoubtedly Switzerland's pharma capital, its tech scene has quietly branched out in some fascinating directions. At the forefront of life sciences, companies such as Genedata are developing the bioinformatics infrastructure that powers genomic research and drug development around the globe. Meanwhile, QuantumBasel is taking things even further by transforming quantum computing theory into practical tools for molecular design and machine learning. However, not everything here is related to medicine — Magnolia has developed a global content management and digital experience platform used by major international brands. Bringing it all together is DayOne, the region's start-up matchmaker that keeps fresh talent and ideas flowing between young innovators and corporate heavyweights.

Basel is Europe’s number one life sciences supercluster and is home to over 800 companies, including Roche and Novartis. It dominates Swiss biotech investment and is the global leader in pharmaceutical R&D and trinational innovation.
Más informaciónRobotics & Drones
Rather than focusing on drones or factory-floor automation, Basel has carved out a highly specific niche in robotics by focusing on medical robotics and lab automation. As part of Europe's leading life sciences supercluster, Basel has become a genuine hub for technologies that are transforming operating theatres and pharmaceutical laboratories. The University of Basel's Department of Biomedical Engineering is at the forefront of research into bio-inspired systems for surgery and rehabilitation.
Saber másSpace
Bern's connection to space exploration dates back to 1969, when an instrument from the University of Bern became the first non-American experiment to land on the Moon. This legacy continues today through world-class planetary science at the Center for Space and Habitability, as well as through the leadership of ESA missions such as the CHEOPS exoplanet-hunting telescope, making Bern one of Europe's quiet powerhouses in space research.
Más informaciónGeneva cannot be compared with Silicon Valley as an ICT and AI hub. It does not have a focus on commercial tech hubs. However, given that the United Nations Headquarters are located there, Geneva is built to align rapid technological advancement with human-centred governance and the needs of society.
The Trust Valley was created to bring together a large number of organisations (400) and experts (500). Thanks to companies such as Kudelski and SICPA, which are based near Lausanne, the region has become a cybersecurity expert.
The Health Valley covers western Switzerland, stretching from Geneva to Bern, with Lausanne at its heart. Thanks to its start-ups, research institutes and university hospital, Lausanne is a leader in medical innovation in the healthcare and life sciences sector.
Thanks to the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne and the canton of Vaud are on the map of the space cluster. With its specialisations in space sustainability, advanced satellite communications and high-precision aerospace manufacturing, the world-famous EPFL has transformed Lausanne into a powerhouse of this ecosystem.
Lausanne and area is home of the International Olympic Committee, 25 sports federations and 40 international sports organisation.
Don't be fooled by Lugano's relaxed Italian-Swiss charm — behind it hums a serious brain trust. The USI Faculty of Informatics, SUPSI and IDSIA (one of Europe's AI research pioneers) rub shoulders with the CSCS, home to 'Alps', one of the world's most powerful supercomputers. Add to this the Lugano Plan ₿ and a homegrown innovation lab, and you have a city that is quietly punching well above its weight in the tech world.
Beyond the algorithms, Lugano has quietly built itself into a pharma powerhouse — the kind of open secret that surprises even seasoned Swiss travellers. The city is home turf for heavyweights like Helsinn Healthcare, IBSA Group, and Cerbios Pharma, while ESASO and ESMO bring some of Europe's sharpest minds in ophthalmology and oncology to its doorstep. Add in the wider canton's dense cluster of drug developers and manufacturers, and Lugano stands out as one of Switzerland's more understated biomedical hubs.
ICT & AI
St. Gallen's ICT scene punches above its size, anchored by homegrown names like Abacus Research (business software), Frontify (brand management) and Sportradar (sports data), alongside global players such as SAP, Microsoft and SWIFT who maintain a presence here. Cybersecurity is a notable niche, led by Compass Security, with regional initiatives like east#digital and IT rockt! keeping the wider Lake Constance tech community connected.
Health & Life Science
Health and life sciences run deep in St. Gallen, anchored by CSL Vifor, a global player in iron deficiency and nephrology therapies headquartered in the region. The area also boasts a dense clinical network, including the Kantonsspital St.Gallen and the Ostschweizer Kinderspital, alongside a strong medtech manufacturing base spanning compression therapy (Sigvaris), diagnostics (Greiner Bio-One) and precision optics (Fisba). Tying research to industry is the Switzerland Innovation Park Ost, which links Empa, the OST and the University of St. Gallen with hospitals and companies to speed up the journey from lab to patient.
