Zurich Zoo, located on the Zürichberg, is home to around 350 animal species in near-natural habitats. As a modern, scientifically managed zoo, its primary goal is the preservation of nature. It works towards this goal in four equally important areas: Species conservation, nature conservation, education and research.
The zoo promotes biodiversity with the high-quality, innovative keeping of endangered animal species - for example in the form of the Masoala Rainforest, the extensive Lewa Savannah and the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park. Further habitats of this kind are being created.
The zoo protects nature by supporting long-term sustainable conservation projects around the world. To protect nature on its own doorstep, it is constantly working to improve its own sustainability.
The zoo sensitises and motivates its guests to actively protect nature. It creates an emotional bond between guests and animals and provides concrete ideas on how everyone can protect nature themselves.
The zoo facilitates research by providing a framework in which the diversity of the animals kept at the zoo can be studied, better understood and ultimately better protected.
